Bear Trap
This Bear Trap, manufactured by S. Newhouse Community, N.Y. was brought by Jack D. Needham to his Homestead in 1882. The homestead was located at Cedar Creek on the East side of Lake Pend Oreille. His son, Gordon Needham, born in 1898 tells stories of his father running steamboat, the Mudhen from Lakeview to Bayview hauling barges of limestone. One time, he decided to take the steamboat to Sandpoint and went bear trapping. He caught a bear that rendered 70 pounds of bear fat, so they made doughnuts and used the rest for cooking.
We can't help but wonder if this was the trap used for that bear.
