Focometer Tool
Used for measuring the fit of eye glasses by Dr. John Page, D.D.S. Dr. Page served Sandpoint as a dentist from 1918 to his retirement in the 1970s. Born in Kansas in 1896, he came to Sandpoint in 1903 with his father, Dr. Joseph B. Page, who was also a dentist. The elder Dr. Page had an office “adjacent to Charlie Foss’s drug store” at the eastern end of the Cedar Street Bridge. In 1908 the office moved to First Avenue. John joined his father’s practice in 1918 after training at the North Pacific College for Dentistry in Portland. “Tuition was about $600 a year, and of course we had to buy our equipment on top of that. It was a three-year course in those days, and you could enter it from high school.” During his time at dental school, Dr. Page also studied voice, and sang for many years with the Presbyterian Church choir. He was active in the Rotary Club, and cut a familiar figure in local parades, riding his innovative Pierce Arrow gear-powered bicycle.
