Horsehair Mittens
The stories of Bonner County winters in the early days sometimes make it seem like the first homesteaders actually lived through an ice age. Maybe not quite that bad... but imagine needing to take the trek into town, miles away through six feet of snow and not having the luxury of your nice seat heated four wheel drive SUV to get you there. But rather a horse drawn sleigh, top down convertible style through a blizzard. These horsehair mittens were sure to keep your hands from developing frostbite, and also came with a horsehair jacket and hat. This horsehair type of wardrobe was not all that common to see, but we're told the horsehair was fantastic at repelling wet snow and keeping you extra toasty on all your winter sleigh riding excursions.
