Masonic Sword
This Masonic Sword belonged to Judge Will F. Whitaker. Whitaker was one of Sandpoint's prominent early pioneers. He arrived in the spring of 1898 when the town was composed of a few houses gathered around a small sawmill and the Northern pacific depot. Upon arrival, he was immediately hired as cashier of the Sandpoint Mercantile Company, which served the Sandpoint Lumber Company and later the Humbird Lumber Company. In 1903 he organized the Traders Bank, the first bank established in Sandpoint, and served as its cashier and manager. Mr. Whitaker took a vital part in the civic affairs of the community, serving on the first village council established in 1901. He was a member of the school board for some 20 years, and did much to establish a sound system, applying his knowledge of business to the running of the board.
