Wooden Yoke
In the 1880s, Chinese laborers came to Bonner County to help build the Northern Pacific and other railroads. Primarily single men, plus a few families, they formed a Chinese settlement in Hope. In addition to working on the railroad, some grew and sold vegetables and opened restaurants. Excluded from the larger community due to racism, the community gradually disbanded. A small Chinese cemetery remains in Hope.
This piece was found in the Hope area and is believed to have been left behind by Chinese laborers in that area.
